Garments should follow the body
The name DNTY is derived from the surnames of its two founders, Duan Ni and Tao Ye. In the global contemporary art field, they are dedicated to exploring a revolutionary concept of body, combining fashion design and dance to pioneer a unique aesthetic centered on circular motion. Their early training in ballet made them acutely aware that rigid, conventional dance costumes often restrict the body's natural expression. It wasn't until they encountered modern dance that their bodies found liberation on every level.
They believe, first and foremost, that clothing should be a reflection of freedom—never a constraint. Instead, it should harmonize with the body. As an extension of the body, fashion design should create a dynamic interplay of tension and ease based on movement, becoming an expansion of the body both internally and externally.
The body traces the path of circular motion. A circle is like a drop of water falling, rippling outward in endless waves—a continuous, unbroken cycle of connection, defined by curves and arcs. In their exploration of movement, the duo pursues a liquid, water-like body—one that is constantly in motion and transformation. Such a body requires clothing that is freer and more attuned to the rhythms of motion, granting it even greater liberation.
Day after day, they refine the body, treating it as a temple for the spirit. Clothing, in turn, adorns the body, and their relationship should be effortless, relaxed, and seamlessly integrated. The circle represents process rather than boundaries, embodied in the body’s stillness and motion alike. If clothing exists for the body, then its beauty lies in dynamism—in the process itself. Garments should follow the body’s lead, like a bird poised to take flight but not yet soaring.
